Apparently some very thick people take offense to my previous blog heading so whatever. Here’s how it is: If you and I are in a discussion, I will be remaining relatively calm, I will keep personal attacks away, but I will not consider what you are saying unless you provide some good information. Barring that, I expect the respect I give. You don’t have to like me or agree with me, but if you act like I child with me, your opinion becomes less valid.

The “I don’t have to play nice” argument.

When you are asked to try and get along with people, it’s not that being smiles and politeness will solve all of your problems.

It’s that having your ideas shat on and your character by extension has never, ever, ever convinced you to change your ideas, so you shouldn’t expect the same of people with whom you disagree.

Think back to when PETA members threw paint on people’s fur coats. Were the fur-wearers wrong? Sure. But destroying someone’s very expensive property is not the way to open the dialogue. If anything, that made both sides just look silly. No progress was made other than PETA getting bad press.

Playing nice isn’t quite what folks mean when they tell you to act less angry with people. Really, they just want you to be civil. A public forum of thoughts like this can’t do its job when it devolves into a shouting contest.

We can disagree and not insult anyone’s intelligence, or use arguments that equate to “NUH UH, YOU’RE SCUM.”

Social decorum isn’t that hard, okay? Okay. Here’s a silly drunk cat as your prize for reading.
